Course Requirements

Applicants must attend the following NHNLA courses:

  • Pre Purchase II: Advanced Housing Counseling
  • Two webinars, Predatory Lending Webinar(mandatory) and one webinar of your choice from the NHNLA course catalog
  • One of the following courses:
    • NHNLA Foreclosure Prevention: Fundamentals of Foreclosure Prevention Counseling or eLearning Foreclosure Prevention I and II
    • NeighborWorks HO 109
    • HUD Loss Mitigation

Exam Requirements:

Applicants must pass the following exams with a score of 80% or higher:

  • Pre Purchase II: Advanced Housing Counseling
  • Foreclosure Prevention: Fundamentals of Foreclosure Prevention Counseling or eLearning Foreclosure Prevention I and II (if applicable)

Practical Experience Requirements

Applicants must have a minimum of three years housing counseling experience.

Submission Requirements

In order to submit the Housing Counselor Certification Application, applicants will need the following documents:

  • A letter signed by both the applicant and their manager or executive director certifying that the practical experience requirements have been met. An example letter can be found here.
  • The National Industry Code of Ethics and Conduct for Homeownership Professionals form, signed by the applicant
  • Pre-Purchase II:Advanced Housing Counseling certificate of course completion
  • Two webinar certificates of completion
  • One of the following certificates of completion:
    • NHNLA Foreclosure Prevention: Fundamentals of Foreclosure Prevention Counseling
    • NeighborWorks HO 109
    • HUD Loss Mitigation

Once the application is complete, click “submit” at the end of the screen. Your application will be reviewed, and notification regarding your certification status will be sent soon thereafter.
